Two of the biggest rivals in western Canada have joined forces to host the Can/Am SuperSeries98 which will take place from September 12-14 in Burnaby and North Vancouver. The tournament will feature four teams from Canada and four teams from the western USA. Joining NSWC and BWC will be OHA and POE. While the western USA will be represented by the Dallas Stars Elite, Colorado Thunderbirds, LA Jr. Kings and the Anaheim Jr. Ducks.
Conference USA
The best bet to make it the furthest in the USA Conference has to be the LA Jr. Kings, although the three other teams in the conference all have competitive squads and should be able to put up a fight.
Colorado Thunderbirds
The Thunderbirds will be lead by power forward Bryan Lockner and small skilled forward Mason Mannek who comes over from Utah. Mannek had 70 goals in 41 games last season. Lockner is a top 10 ranked prospect in the western USA. Decent offensive depth should be provided by Noah Prokop, George Cathers and Chase Sakic. Defensively, the Thunderbirds will look to Nolan Foote (son of Adam) and Bronson Fox to lead the way.
Kingpin: F – Bryan Lockner
Anaheim Jr. Ducks
The Anaheim Jr. Ducks have a strong, big squad this year and as a result have been able to hang in this fall against Midget AAA teams with the exception of one lopsided loss to Alaska. In league play, the Jr. Ducks started off with a 5-1 victory over Orange County. Offensively the team will be led by Tanner Ensign (ranked 7th in western USA), Jonah Gold, Blake Reed, Tae Lee and Logan Harris. Harris (6’3 170lbs) is big and physical and could be a force this weekend. Defensively, look for Noah Lee and Slava Demin to make an impact. In goal, Tomas Leet is the go-to guy! Leet posted a 0.38 GAA in the SCAHA AA league last year with the LA Jr. Kings.
Kingpin: F – Tanner Ensign
Dallas Stars Elite
The Stu Barnes led Dallas team will be led by his son Jack Barnes, Ryan O’Reilly (ranked top 5 western USA) and F – Connor Griebenow. The absence of Ethan Harrison (2001 born) is a blow to the Stars attack but they still should still have enough offence to get by. Clay Cassidy will handle the bulk of the goaltending duties.
Kingpin: F – Ryan O’Reilly
LA Jr. Kings
Once again, the LA Jr. Kings are one of the better teams in the western USA and certainly the top team in this American Division of this tournament. The team has virtually no holes and will be led by one of the top western USA prospects in Nick Castro. Others up front who should contribute are speedy Jackson Wozniak (5’6 140), big, physical 6’1 165lb Punisa Lekovic, physical forward Henri Schreifels who compares to ’99 born Jr. King draftee Cam Hausinger. Defensively, Junior Delgado is a fearless shot blocker who is apt at clearing the front of the net and can also supply offence. Aiden Metcalfe has a tremendous mix of size, speed and vision from the backend as does Callahan Neuroth. In goal, Connor Duffy is big goalie who plays a butterfly style of game and is very agile.
Kingpin: F – Nick Castro
Conference Canada
The Canadian Conference is represented by four of the top twelve teams in the WEHP pre-season western Canada rankings. The situation with the Canadian teams is a bit different with most squads still carrying a few extra players who are on the bubble and are likely to see some game action. NSWC will be led by a dynamic offence led by Luka Burzan and Jackson Shepard. OHA have a well-rounded team, although likely not as strong as last year. POE once again should be decent but lack elite talent. BWC have some question marks this year and look to have fallen a bit in the PCAHA.
Burnaby Winter Club Bruins
For years, BWC was easily the class of the PCAHA flight 1 division, losing a total of just 3 games in the regular season over the past five years. Included was a back to back seasons in 9-10 and 10-11 to which they went 20-0-0 in 10-11 and 17-0-1 in 9-10. The highest total of goals allowed during the stretch was in 11-12 where they allowed just 26. This season looks to be a challenge for the Bruins to be a top 10 team in western Canada and a threat in major tournaments. With just Ilijah Colina being the lone returnee and very little offensive depth, it is looking like they could be in for a slight fall this year. They will look to Baxter Anderson, Justyn Gurney and Sean Gulka to provide some offensive and take a huge step up in production. Defensively, Sahvan Gill, Tommy Annable and Gianni Fairbrother are capable but unspectacular. In goal, Nick Lee will have to stand tall as this BWC team will face much more shots against than in recent seasons.
Kingpin: F – Ilijah Colina
North Shore Winter Club Winterhawks
NSWC have now passed BWC as the cream of the crop in the PCAHA. Coming off of a 18-1-1 2013-2014 season in which they allowed just 11 goals and a 19-0-1 2012-2013 season, it looks like more of the same this year. They have landed some high end recruits such as; 1st overall ranked Luka Burzan and his Surrey team-mate Tyler Ho. To go along with those talented forwards are some high end defenceman coming over such as Ethan Cap and the return of talented players F – Jackson Shepard, F – Jackson Leppard and Kabir Gill to name a few. Big 6’3 G – Donovan Buskey should provide strong goaltending for the team. NSWC are the favorites in western Canada entering the season.
Kingpin: F – Luka Burzan
Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy
The POE roster has yet to be finalized but based on the early commitments, the team looks to be a top 10 squad once again. The strength of the team looks to be at forward and in goal by early indications. At forward, POE have brought in some high end talent with the likes of Coleton Bilodeau from Vernon, Eli Zummack from Kelowna and Nick Leyer from St. Albert. Shawn Harke (Camrose), Pavel Gogolev and 2001 born Kjell Kjemhus give POE a good base to work from. Jordan Wilde from Kelowna should be the starter and be very good along with Cole Wilson who comes over from Spruce Grove of the ERBHL. Defensively, returnees – Lucas Gaudet and huge 6’5 D – Kyle Pow are capable.
Kingpin – Coleton Bilodeau
Okanagan Hockey Academy
As has become the norm in recent years, OHA once again look to be a force not only in the newly formed CSSHL Bantam Prep League but also in major tournaments. Leading the way offensively should be a pair of “Ty’s” in big power forward types in Ty Kolle who played last year in Kamloops and Tyler Popowich who put up 15 points in 39 games last year as a rookie bantam in seeing limited ice time. They have also recruiting some high end defenseman with big Mitchell Prowse heading over from Kelowna, Seth Bafaro from Kamloops and Kelvin Hair from North Vancouver. Goaltending is still a bit up in the air as there has been no indication at this point who is in camp.
Kingpin – D- Mitchell Prowse
